When I read the prompt for bloggers today at the Daily Post on WordPress, there have been some of those in my family. Then, I read it more closely to see this: There are 344 days remaining in the year. Describe what you’d like to be doing on day 211. (Hint: that’s July 30th.)
I can’t begin to imagine what I’m going to be doing this summer. I hope that there will be some terrific cookouts, trips to the beach, and time with my family. Family, yes, that’s it; that’s what I’ll write about.
When my nephew Phillip was a little boy, he as a very good story-teller; a skill that has served him well throughout his life. Phil enjoyed creating stories and cartoons–I remember him giving me one for my birthday. It was of a rocket ship and space travel and I had it for years; it may even still be in a box in my basement.
On any given Sunday when Phil was little we would get together on the weekends, usually Sunday afternoons for dinner. One of these many afternoons my sister Nancy was pregnant with her first child. We were all talking about whether it would be a boy or a girl. Phil the precocious prognosticator took a shot. He carefully lined his body and face up against the corner of the refrigerator, so that only half of his face and body could be seen by those of us watching.
In the reflection of the white Sears Kenmore he could see it: “Auntie Nancy is going to have a girl.” He said it with the conviction of a little boy sure as sure can be of his prediction. And so it came to pass, Laura Beth was born that October.
This summer my nephew, Phil, and his delightful wife Jannah, will add a new baby our family. Everyone is excited and is looking forward to another little one to spoil. There are no predictions on gender yet. You can be sure though, we will share this story about Phil with his child when the time comes.
This story falls into the category of “Stories We Tell Every Chance We Get”; so today’s thank you is for Phil, for telling great stories and adding another child to this crazy family to carry on the tradition.
