People, Let Me Tell You ‘Bout My Best Friend

Tell us the origin story of your best friend. How did you become friends? What is it that keeps your friendship rockin’ after all these years?

I know some of you who read my blog may think this is the easy way out for today’s blog post, but I’ve written about my childhood best friend before.  We are still friends and it’s a relationship I treasure!  So, please enjoy again the post I shared back in October of 2013 in celebration of Lynne’s birthday!

I have a great friend. It’s not many people in the world you can say have known you longer than some of your family members, but I’ve known her since I was five years old, which is longer than my younger brother and sister have been alive.

Tonight my husband and I went over to Lynne’s parents’ house to help celebrate her 50th birthday. Of course she reminds me, almost every year, that I am older than she–and always will be! No matter, I still jumped at the chance to sing and laugh and celebrate with her and her family.

Lynne tells me that she’s been enjoying reading this blog. She said that I remember things that she wouldn’t even necessarily think of, like the previous post about library cards. So for her, on this very special birthday, let’s see Lynne, if you remember these little tidbits:

cot

  • Friday night sleepovers, bringing the roll away cot either upstairs, when you shared a bedroom with Lauren, or downstairs when the den became your bedroom.
  • Waiting on my front steps on early evenings in May or October when you could hear us still saying the rosary; you knew I couldn’t come out until we were done.
  • Hanging out at the Greenwich Club on hot summer days and eating snack bar food–I even lost a tooth once when we ate Sugar Babies candies. And the tooth wasn’t loose!gclub
  • Saying good-bye to Lisa when she moved from the neighborhood.
  • Going over to your new house on Gilbert Stuart and I accidentally pulled out one of the rungs from the stairway rail going up the stairs. (I don’t think we told your parents about it because there was some handyman type there to fix it.)

camphoffman2006myphotos717And one of my favorite memories, the one that when we look back proves our friendship would last a lifetime: at Girl Scout overnight camp, you were my “buddy”. You got up with me when I had to go to the “lat” in the middle of the night, and more importantly you left your big flashlight on for me all night so I wouldn’t be scared.

Happy birthday, Lynne. Thank you so much for being my friend all these years. I love you!lynne bday
